Widescreen, formed in 2007 by David Clark Allen (aka David Randall-Goddard) is the creation of three East Dulwich musicians who are currently carving out a successful career with their latin-electronica sound. The band - David, Larry and Charlotte - brought their cinematic musical vision straight into last year’s La Linea Festival where they opened for the Buena Vista Social Club. Suported Eliades Ochoa and Ojos de Brujo!

Raised in the heart of Hollywood, David, the band’s guitarist and true latin - he is mexican-american - first appeared on stage aged four, at his parents’ famous LA nightclub El Cid. During the 70s, David was a musician at the forefront of the progressive rock movement in Europe, his cult prog rock band Carmen blazing the world music trail well ahead of its time, and opening for Jethro Tull, David Bowie, Santana and Blue Oyster Cult amongst many others. He is also an accomplished songwriter whose work appears on two of Mae West’s albums, and on Agnietta of Abba’s.

The recent rerelease of Carmen’s three albums, by Angelair, was the catalyst for David’s inspiration to make new music. His first album of new instrumental music in 30 years, released in the same package brought David into contact with reknowned producer and mixer Larry Lush. The new album became the seed for the new band. David’s melodies, picking up much of the progressive flamenco rock flavour of Carmen’s music, Larry’s rhythmic arrangements, alchemical mixes and brilliant programming and Charlotte’s fiery european jazz violin give the music its film score quality, music which falls somewhere between Sergio Leone and Nine Inch Nails.

Larry Lush, whose parents also ran a nightclub, the infamous Diamond Lil’s in Plymouth, but who incidentally isn’t latin, has also been on stage from an early age, and is the band’s producer, keyboard and accordion player. Listed extensively on Google Larry also has a music career spanning several decades, and is associated with the likes of George Michael, Faithless and The Jerry Springer Musical.

Charlotte Medcalf, the strings of the band, whose parents didn’t own a nightclub, and who also isn’t latin, has an impressive musical/theatrical cv spanning an equal number of decades. Whilst she is most famously remembered locally by the under fives for her appearance in Brum,
she has worked for some of the best British theatre companies and directors of the last twenty years, appearing as Fraulein Kost in the original Sam Mendes’ production of Cabaret, and working for Complicite Theatre Company for over twelve years, appearing in their masterpiece The Street of Crocodiles.

Widescreen both in name and nature, they are a kicking combination of flamenco, rock, latin, eastern european and north african, an epic electro-flamenco-world musical fusion. On cd their work is intense, complex and sophisticated, live they are explosive and passionate, each of them bringing to the band a track record as long as a ten foot chorizo, and just as tasty.
